Bing gains market share - slowly E-mail

Bing's gradually improving Microsoft's share of the search market, but it is still doing a lot better in the US than internationally.

According to the latest numbers from StatCounter, Bing's search share has risen by more than one percentage point in the last month.

The June share of 8.23 percent for Bing/MSN Search/Live Search was comfortably beaten by July's 9.41 percent for Bing alone.

This fed into a similar improvement for the combined Bing and Yahoo! figures, which went from 19.27 percent to 20.36 percent. (Yes, Yahoo!'s share was off a little, but by less than 0.1 of a point.)

Most of the gain came at Google's expense. The search giant's share slipped from 78.48 percent to 77.54 percent.

But from a global perspective, Bing is having a smaller impact on Google's share. Microsoft/Yahoo!'s worldwide share only rose fractionally from 8.45 percent to 8.77 percent.

Google slipped from 89.80 percent to 89.23 percent, implying that other (probably regional) search engines are picking up share.

Ovum senior analyst Mike Davis noted "Yahoo's use of Bing will not start until 2010 – and then on a geographical basis, with the priority being the US and then Europe.

"This will give Baidu, the strong Chinese Internet search provider, and Naver, the most popular player in South Korea, plenty of opportunities to reinforce and expand their positions in that geography."

StatCounter's search share figures are based on more than one billion search engine referral clicks to the network of more than three million sites monitored by the company.

Like Net Applications Market Share report (but unlike Hitwise's analysis of ISP proxy logs), StatCounter's figures are based on traffic resulting from search engines, not visits to search sites.
