The Australian Government’s information systems support agency for the law enforcement community - CrimTrac - has awarded a three-year, ground-up IT overhaul contract understood to be worth more than $10 million to UK-based services outfit Logica.

The deal includes a server refresh and consolidation, as well as the design, build and management of two data centres operations in Canberra. The agencies communications infratstructure will also be upgraded.

Logica sales director for services Bernadette Harkin told iTWire the project would improve the availability of key CrimTrac applications – including the National Fingerprint Identification System and National DNA Database – as well as cater to increased activity from users from other state and territory jurisdictions.

The infrastructure build and switch-over is expected to be completed by April next year, after which Logica will administer and manage the IT environment on behalf of CrimTrac’s 220 staff for a minimum three years.

Under the terms of the contract Logica would also design and service disaster recovery facilities for the agency.

The big winners in the supply deal in addition to Logica are vendors Microsoft, EMC, VMware, Cisco, Oracle and Symantec. The upgrade in includes operating system and database upgrades in Windows, Red Hat, SQL, Exchange and Oracle, among others.

CrimTrac has declined to say how much the contract is worth. The deal has not yet been gazetted.

“Logica was awarded the contract following a competitive tender process to assist the agency consolidate existing technologies and build new infrastructure platforms to support the organisation’s future projects,” CrimTrac chief executive Ben McDevitt said.

Logica Australia chief executive Colin Holgate said the company had for years been working behind the scenes to deliver IT projects for mission-critical, high-volume data environments.

“Winning this contract demonstrates our reputation for our innovation, commitment, and strong delivery capabilities,” Holgate said.
