Australian web hosting and domain name registrar, MelbourneIT, has snared a contract to manage the domain name portfolio for popular social networking site, Twitter.

MelbourneIT CEO and managing director, Theo Hnarakis, said today the company’s corporate domain management solution, which is to be deployed by Twitter, allows companies to optimise and effectively manage their domain portfolios, “enabling complete control of every aspect of domain name management, including domain name system (DNS) management."

Hnarakis said the management solution also provided protection against infringement and malicious web attacks.

“We are very pleased to be working with Twitter, as a rapidly growing company that has vastly extended the reach of social networking. Companies with a significant Internet presence recognise the value Melbourne IT digital brand services delivers, as a leading provider of digital brand management and protection services.”

According to Hnarakis, a recent report from global information and media organisation The Nielson Company, showed that unique visitors to twitter.com increased more than 10 fold year-on-year from 475,000 in February 2008 to seven million in February 2009, making it the fastest growing site in the member communities category for the month.

As reported by iTWire last week, MelbourneIT announced it had formed a partnership with business-to-business e-commerce website, Alibaba to launch a service for Australian export-oriented small businesses trading with companies around the world.
