Earlier this week, the Black Hat security conference saw a demonstration of a method of taking control of an iPhone through spurious SMS messages. Today, Apple patched the vulnerability

Black Hat attracts technical security experts from all over -- and from both sides of the security fence -- to share what they've learned about security breaches with an eye toward thwarting them.

On Tuesday, writer/analyst/hacker Charlie Miller announced that he had developed a way to take over an iPhone through a series of SMS messages.

Miller demonstrated the technique at Black Hat on Thursday.

Today, Apple released iPhone 3.0.1. The announcement reads, "Receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message may lead to an unexpected service interruption or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved error handling."

The announcement gives credit to Miller and to Collin Mulliner for reporting the problem.

iPhone users will be able to update their phones by attaching it to their computers and choosing the Check for Update option in iTunes.
