On Tuesday, writer/analyst/hacker Charlie Miller announced that he had developed a way to take over an iPhone through a series of SMS messages. Miller demonstrated the technique at Black Hat on Thursday. Today, Apple released iPhone 3.0.1. The announcement reads, "Receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message may lead to an unexpected service interruption or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved error handling." The announcement gives credit to Miller and to Collin Mulliner for reporting the problem. iPhone users will be able to update their phones by attaching it to their computers and choosing the Check for Update option in iTunes. |
