Science DiscussionsWith only five minutes left for its landing, the space shuttle Endeavour was traveling at approximately 600 miles per hour. Over the next five minutes, it reduced its speed sufficiently to make a picture-perfect landing at Kennedy's runway 15. The astronauts of the STS-127 mission successfully delivered and installed the final two components of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM): the Exposed Facility (JEM-EF) and the Exposed Section of the Experiment Logistics Module (ELM-ES). [corrected 8-3-09] Five spacewalks were conducted during the mission to install all of the hardware brought up to the space station by the space shuttle. With the six member of the Expedition 20 International Space Station crew, and the seven members of Endeavour, the thirteen humans in space at any one time ties the record, and sets the record for most humans in space at any given time in the same vehicle (in this case, all thirteen onboard the space station). The record of thirteen people in space at one time was first recorded when the seven-member U.S. STS-67 space shuttle crew were in space along with the three-member Russian Soyuz TM-20 crew (at the Mir space station) and the three-member Russian/U.S. TM-21 crew (also at the Mir space station) during March 14-18, 1995. With this mission in the record books, NASA has only eight shuttle missions left before the fleet is retired. All remaining missions, with its three space shuttles, are dedicated to completing the construction of the ISS. The retirement of the shuttle fleet is scheduled for the end of 2010.
