Citrix has previewed a version of Citrix Receiver for Android, widening the range of devices that can be used with virtual desktops.

Citrix Receiver, already available for Windows and iPhone, allows the remote use of Windows applications running on XenDesktop and XenApp.

Citrix officials describe the program as "a lightweight universal software client that makes accessing applications and IT services on any device as easy as turning on a TV."

By widening the range of supported hardware, the company aims to make Receiver "a ubiquitous software client for accessing corporate applications and data" - much as Flash has become for multimedia content.

Interest in Android as an operating system for mobile devices larger than mobile phones suggests Citrix's announcement is well timed.

A technology preview of Receiver for Android is expected before the end of the year.
