The Australian Democrats has appointed an opponent of Internet filtering, and board member of Electronic Frontiers Australia, Geordie Guy as its new national technology policy coordinator.

His is the first appointment under new policy development process announced this week as part of the Australian Democrats efforts to rebuild.

Guy has been an active figure in the fight against Internet censorship. According to the Democrats, "He is a computer systems architect with a decade of experience working with business and people in the IT industry itself as well as other markets and a qualified network engineer." In an article in New Matilda last December, Guy set out to explain the technical limitations of the Government's ISP-side filtering plan.

The Democrats said that, under his direction its Technology Policy working group would "continue the...search for a better solution than censorship to current web content concerns through the nointernetcensorship.com campaign website." The working group will also work on issues such as access to broadband, technology infrastructure, and issues raised by how people interact in the online society.

"I want to see a civil, cohesive society that encompasses an online Australia as well as an offline one, in a framework of technically competent policy," Guy said.

Yesterday, 21 July, the Democrats announced a new policy development process that it said would use online tools and working groups of ordinary members to develop policies that would then be put to a ballot of the full membership to become official party policy. The party also plans to "engage the broader community in a long series of policy surveys to be conducted over coming months."
