Office 2008 SP2: tweaks, fixes and a new Connection E-mail

While Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac SP2 is mostly about "speed, stability and compatibility", it does deliver a new application - Document Connection for Mac.

Document Connection for Mac marks the arrival of Microsoft's 'software plus services' model to the Mac world. The new program supports access and browsing of documents in SharePoint environments or Microsoft Office Live Workspace.

Microsoft has also recently improved SharePoint and Office Live's support for Safari.

"There's never been a better time to try Office 2008 for Mac — with SP2 we are not only delivering on top customer requests midcycle, but also taking a first step in bringing Microsoft software plus services to Mac users," said Danica Aitken, Australia and New Zealand category marketing manager at Microsoft's Mac business unit.

"This connection unlocks the door for Mac users to Microsoft services for easier collaboration and file sharing with colleagues, customers and classmates."

So what's changed in the core Office apps?

All four applications in the suite get some update love, in addition to several Office-wide improvements (better stability and various text-related changes).

Perhaps the most significant changes are in PowerPoint, which now allows the creation of custom paths for animations, user-selectable default themes (it sounds minor, but it was a particular source of irritation), the ability to create a text box simply by double-clicking, better control over display mirroring, and the return of support for animated GIF images.

Several smaller changes will also be welcome, including the more consistent application of the spelling checker and AutoCorrect, correctly opening templates as new files (largely eliminating the risk of accidentally overwriting them), and multiple improvements to text handling.

More changes to PowerPoint are discussed on page 2, along with changes to Word.
