Cannabis apps flourishing for iPhone E-mail

Legal dope? There's an app for that. In fact, there are two.

A new $US2.99 app for the iPhone and iPod touch aims to connect users with medical cannabis resources including doctors, providers, lawyers and law-reform movements.

The app has a map-based interface to display nearby resources in US states that have laws permitting the use of cannabis for medical purposes. It also locates 'coffee shops' in places such as Amsterdam where cannabis can be legally used.

Cannabis was developed by legal cannabis patient Julian Cain in conjunction with Ajnag.com, which - along with iMedicalCannabis.org - provides the databases accessed by the app.

Initial feedback is mixed. Of the seven ratings posted by customers at the time of writing, three gave it just one star (the lowest possible) and two awarded the top mark of five stars. Cannabis also attracted one three-star and one four-star ratings.

Complaints focus on the completeness of the database (eg, "One listing for Oregon? A state that has had MM [medical marijuana] for almost a decade?" asked 'Gbr57') as well as the operation of the program ("Constantly goes back to the main screen when I'm using the app" said 'DeadBoy1').

But Cannabis isn't the only program of its kind in the App Store.

There's also Californian Herbal Caregivers (CHC), a $US0.99 app that lists more than 700 medical marijuana dispensaries in California. Less comprehensive geographical coverage than Cannabis, perhaps, but it may be all some people need.

CHC also gets mixed reviews, with eight one-star, four two-star, six three-star and 15 five-star ratings.
