The NPD figures for June are out, and they tell a continuing tale of decline in the sector once thought to be recession proof. In particular, pressure on Sony to drop the PlayStation 3 retail price is building.Featured Whitepaper

The video game industry fell 31 percent to a total of US$1.17 billion for the month of June. According to NPD Group this is the single largest decline since 2000. Game software fell by 29 percent (To US$625.8 million) whilst sales of games hardware dropped by 28 percent (US$382.6 million). All up, the industry is down 12 percent in year-to-date figures. North American hardware sales: June 2009 (NPD Group) * 1. NDS: 766,500 * 2. Wii: 361,700 * 3. X360: 240,600 * 4. PS3: 164,700 * 5. PSP: 163,500 * 6. PS2: 152,700 Whilst Nintendo remains at the top of hardware sales, in June 2008 the NDS shipped 783K of the hand-held gaming platform, whilst the Wii went home to almost 667K American households. In fact the only real winner on the hardware front, comparing 2008 to a more dreary 2009 was the Microsoft Xbox 360, selling 219K the previous year, the box stayed steady at 240K. But sometimes comparing past year results to current is not a good move without context. Sony for example may well be quaking in their boots seeing the PlayStation brand faltering badly against the competition. In fact it is almost a little embarrassing that the venerable workhorse PlayStation 2 almost outsells the Sony flagship device the PlayStation 3 And looking at the numbers further, the PlayStation 3 sold 164.7K units this June, whilst 2008’s June figure was a whopping 405.5K, a drop of close to 60 percent. But looking closer, June 2008 was the month for Metal Gear Solid 4’s exclusive release on PS3, a fact that shipped more than 220K MSG4/PS3 bundles during that month. So what do the people paid to look at these things think? Check page two for some analysis. |
