Purity Ring for iPhone E-mail
by Stephen Withers

No, it's not a ringtone, it's virtual jewellery to promote chastity.

If ever an application deserved to be free, this is it.

Island Wall Entertainment's PurityRing is about as functional as the notorious I Am Rich.

It reads a purity pledge (to abstain from sex before marriage) and if it is accepted by the user it displays "a timeless digital spinning Purity Ring".

Whatever you think of purity pledges (and apparently research suggests that those taking such pledges are no more likely to remain virgins, though they are less likely to be prepared for their first sexual encounter and therefore are at greater risk of pregnancy or infection), the application is a lot less functional than many free applications.

"We would ask that you forward the App information to anyone that has taken the Pledge or is considering doing so," asks the developer.

Well, yes, at almost a dollar a pop I can see why.

Maybe Island Wall's motivations are pure, but the whole thing comes across as a sordid venture - especially when the description of PurityRing is stuffed with potential search terms such as Miley Cyrus, Barack Obama, Russell Brand, Selena Gomez, and Jessica Simpson.
