China remains a bright spot for the region, as was India, and shipment volumes for the region had returned to positive territory after several quarters of decline.

For the Australian market, IDC’s rego says the expectation of meeting the 1 per cent growth was good news.

Although modest compared to the 12 per cent growth the market experienced in 2008 over 2007, just ending the year in positive territory would point the way to a strong 2010.

The return of business buyers into the market was also cause for optimism, especially as they will join an expected consumer market push as buyers jump into the Christmas market to upgrade to Windows 7 operating system.

“The popularity of mini-notebooks helped avoid a further decline in the overall PC market. However, the new light, thin and affordable notebook platforms that are coming into the market have the potential to contribute to another revolution similar to the mini-notebook one, especially with the expectation of the Windows 7 launch which will make them ideal Christmas gifts,” Rego said.

Hewlett-Packard continues to be market leader in Australia with a 20 per cent market share, followed by Dell and Acer with 17 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
