Science DiscussionsThe Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Trust for America's Health (TAH) performed the 2009 survey. Headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, the Foundation found that 32.5% of the people of Mississippi were classified as obese. In 2008, the state weighed in at 31.7% with its obesity rating. The RWJ Foundation also found that 44.4% of the children of Mississippi, of the ages ten to 17 years, were classified as overweight or obese (extremely overweight). West Virginia had 31.2% of its population tagged with obesity, making it the second fattest state in the union. Alabama, at 31.1%, Tennessee, at 30.2%, and South Carolina, at 29.7% round out (literally) the top five states with obesity problems. Robert Wood Johnson II expanded a small firm into Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest health product maker. The Foundation was created a few years after his death from millions of shares of the company’s stock. The Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Steve Schroeder (who served as its president from 1990 to 2002) led the fight against smoking and tobacco use. Adult and teenage smokers have lowered their percentages since 1995 based in part by the actions of the Foundation. Now, the Foundation intends to use a similar strategy to fight childhood obesity. Page two continues with more statistics and comments about the growing weight problem in the United States, and all over the world. |
