Optus has announced that it D3 satellite, the ninth in a 24 year history of Australian domestic satellites, will be launched by Arianespace during August.
Paul Sheridan, director of Optus Satellite said, “We are especially excited about Optus D3 because, for the first time in a decade, the new satellite will increase Optus’ fleet capacity by more than 30 percent, providing new business opportunities in broadcast television, direct-to-home market, new data services and services bundling.”

Like Optus’ D1, launched in October 2006, and D2, launched (October 2007) it has been built by Orbital Science Corporation and will be launched by an Ariane-5 rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana.

Optus announced plans for the satellite in March 2007 after initially planning only two D series satellites. It said the decision had been taken as a result of continued demand especially for television broadcast services. However there had been numerous reports, never confirmed by Optus, of a major configuration flaw with D1 that had severely compromised its performance.

At the time of its announcement, Foxtel had already signed up to take capacity on the D3 satellite with CEO Kim Williams saying it would "provide the platform for subscription television services in Australia for the next decade and beyond...[enabling]  Foxtel to deliver new services to our customers on our direct-to-home satellite platform including high definition content."
