Last week, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke sent a letter to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce raising the possibility that the filtering software would be a trade barrier in violation of World Trade Organization rules. As reported by Reuters , the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology would "delay the mandatory installation of the controversial 'Green Dam-Youth Escort' filtering software on new computers." Reuters quoted Beijing Internet entrepreneur Wang Junxiu as saying, "They never expected the backlash would be so vehement. "This will just peter out now and the government will hope it will be soon forgotten, I'd say." The requirement was set to go into effect on July 1; no new target date was given by the Ministry. |
