Sony is dropping rumours of ramping up the PSP as a viable platform, in order to take on the encroaching Apple iPhone as a gaming and voice device.

According to a Reuters report out of Tokyo, Sony Corp is assembling a technical team charged with bringing to market a combo gaming and phone device.

Specifically the team will be looking at combining the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) with Sony Ericsson mobile phone technology.

As the iPhone gains recognition as a gaming platform, especially with the faster processor, Open GL 2.0 equipped 3GS hitting the market, more and more, traditional game developers are turning their resources to harnessing this market share.

Sony has only just revamped the PSP design , utilising the E3 show earlier this month to unveil the PSP Go.

A much slimmer version of the former (and still for sale) PSP 3000, minus the UMD media option, and with a sliding keyboard design showed Sony’s intention for a new PSP marketing push through 2009 and beyond.

This was backed by AAA software franchises making their way to the portable device.  Expect on-the-go versions of Little Big Planet, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, Harry Potter, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid franchises.

Of course, this team will need to come up with another iteration of the PSP hardware, unless lacking an onboard microphone is not seen as a significant impediment to the introduction of voice functionality.

The next hurdle will be brand recognition, whilst Sony has the advantage of having the established Ericsson and PSP branding in the market, the marrying of mobile with gaming combo will require a significant push to catch the public eye.

Just ask the folk over at Nokia, who failed on the hardware front with the N-Gage, shifting the mobile gaming service to a software only format after a couple of attempts to market a phone/gaming device.
