iPhone 3GS: still the best? E-mail

Being in the presence of an actual US Apple executive with a much better chance of effecting changes or communicating feedback from users, the opportunity to give some direct feedback and ask questions was definitely taken!

I asked why the 3GS video trimming permanently deleted the trimmed video, instead of saving an original copy for later editing.

From memory, Frank noted this was as a space saving measure, but said that users could also synchronise their iPhones to preserve all video as recorded.

Of course this doesn’t help those who record a long video and want to send a short clip to someone on the spot, as they’ll delete all the video that was trimmed, but it’s clearly something that Apple will have to address in the future, which Frank alluded to.

That’s of course if some app developer doesn’t do it first – surely a cool third party video editing app will be with us soon enough.

For some reason we were looking at the Weather app, and I noted that since the calendar app showed you the correct day and date, and there were plenty of other indicators on the “home screen” of icons (such as missed calls, email etc), why couldn’t the weather app show you the temperature of your primary city, and perhaps even change the graphic to suit the forecast conditions, such as the current sunshine, or clouds, rain, etc.

Frank noted that it seemed a good idea and he’d pass on the feedback, although I’m sure people wondered why Apple hadn’t done that from the iPhone’s original launch.

When we got to the oleophobic screen, I wondered about screen protectors covering the oil-resistant nature of the new screen, and wondered aloud if it was possible to make oleophobic screen protectors.

Frank said it could be an interesting opportunity for a third party screen protector company to investigate.

As I hadn’t seen the screen in action yet, we loaded it up with fingerprints and they instantly wiped away as promised.

It’s a great feature that really makes a difference to easily keeping the screen clean, but one thing I’ve noticed after a few days use – the back of the iPhone is definitely not covered with the same oleophobic technology, and thus remains as magnetic to fingerprints as ever – if not encased by a cover.

What did I ask next that elicited an expected response? Please read on to page 3!
