According to CNet, one idea being floated is offering the OS on a thumb drive. Another choice would be to continue to offer Windows 7 via download, as the company has already done with the beta and release candidate. A third option being considered is to make the upgrade available through Best Buy's Geek Squad tech support service. CNet quotes a merchant director at Best Buy as saying his company is developing ways to streamline Windows 7 upgrades and already helps netbook owners install other types of software. An internal memo outlining Best Buy's marketing plans for Windows 7, leaked earlier this month, stressed the company's intention to "ensure users get switched over successfully to the new operating system." As CNet points out, upgrading from Windows XP -- the version most netbooks run -- requires a clean install of Windows 7, which is already going to make life difficult for netbook owners. |
