Book review: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out E-mail

Despite the seeming ubiquity of SharePoint Server its administration and maintenance can, at times, be cryptic and seemingly impenetrable. This Microsoft Press book gives a deep explanation of how to master the beast.

Where this title claims to differ from competing SharePoint books is that it quickly sweeps through introductory guides to what SharePoint is and why you might use it and even basic navigation. Rather than being the core of the book, these purely lead on to the real matter.

As such, this book is aimed squarely at those who are already familiar with SharePoint Services and have some experience and exposure and need to know more and is split into seven broad categories.

On the development side, readers will learn how to design sites and pages from a browser and then with FrontPage 2003, and ultimately with Visual Studio.

Administrators, meanwhile, will learn how to plan, install, backup and migrate SharePoint sites as well as administer the server and manage site-wide settings.

It is a deep and meaty technical tome with much to offer those seeking a deeper and more comprehensive guide to SharePoint internals than other works.

Unfortunately, while all the content on SharePoint Services itself is still relevant today the sections on development outside the browser are showing some age. FrontPage 2003 is used as one development tool rather than SharePoint Designer 2007, and similarly, the section on Visual Studio prompts the user to download out-of-date templates that refuse to recognise Visual Studio is installed when running either Visual Studio 2005 or 2008.

These issues will likely not bother admins at all, but hard-core developers may want to look around a bit more.

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out, ISBN 0-7356-2171-3 retails for $US 49.99 or AUD $105 and is available through Microsoft Press.
