iPhone applications developer, Sygic, today launched what it says is the first Australian turn-by-turn voice guided navigation application for the iPhone.

In a partnership with Sensis mapping provider, Whereis, Sygic says Australian iPhone users who download its mobile maps 2009 Australia application from the Apple iTunes store will have access to the map data and “content-rich navigation services” offered by Whereis.

Whereis commercial manager, Fred Curtis, said today content available via the new application will include more than 600,000 points of interest, including content from Yellow Pages and UBD, and he says Australian users will also have access to detailed information including comprehensive speed and red light alerts.

“The partnership is a great step towards ensuring more Australians have easy access to a quality navigation experience across a range of devices. The launch of a navigation product like this on the iPhone is an exciting advancement.”

The new iPhone app is available to Australian users from the iTunes App Store from today, and Sygic’s PR manager, Anna Hurbanic, says all that users will need to do is log onto the iTunes App Store, search for “Sygic” and download the application.

“Sygic turns your iPhone into a navigation device that you always have on you,” says Hurbanic, with the application on the market in Australia for $79.99.

Hurbanic says the new navigation app can be used both in the car as well as on a bicycle by just selecting the mode, and the system will calculate the best route for you.

According to Sygic, the new app includes Whereis instant re-routing in case you missed the turn, lane assistance, speed restrictions to help you avoid speeding, information about school zones and other safety alerts.
