The researchers concluded, according to their paper’s abstract: “Consumption of skim milk, in comparison with a fruit drink, leads to increased perceptions of satiety and to decreased energy intake at a subsequent meal.”

The researchers contend that the higher protein content of milk over fruit drink, the lactose within milk, and the thicker consistency of milk all play roles in satisfying hunger in people throughout the mornings and helping them to eat less at lunch.

They suggest that drinking milk at breakfast may help in controlling your weight.

For more information on milk, go to the March 20, 2009 U.S. News and World Report article “5 Nutrition Facts About Milk and Healthy Kids” and the WhyMilk.com website “Drink Well. Live Well."

The WhyMilk website states, "Milk is packed with 9 essential nutrients that are important for you and your family. This nutrient-laden liquid is a nutritional bargain – offering more nutrition for your dollar than virtually any other beverage you can buy."

And, "Milk is one of the “food groups to encourage” in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend 3 cups of lowfat or fat-free milk a day."
