Symantec and HP announced that HP's consumer desktop and notebook PCs will come with a free trial of the former's online backup service.

The online backup trial period will be good for 30 days and will provide 5 GB of onine storage.

The storage is encrypted, both on its way to and from Symantec's data centers and while it's stored on Symantec's servers.

As with most online backup services, backups happen automatically on a customizable schedule, and are incremental after the first session.

Stored files can be accessed via any Web browser.

After the 30-day trial period expires, the cost of the backup service will be US$50 per year.

Symantec claims more than 8 million customers for its backup service, processing 3 million backups a day.

HP computers already ship with a 60-day trial version of Norton Internet Security.
