Unified communications vendor Avaya and global behemoth IBM have announced an extension of their eight-year alliance to provide more secure communications systems.

From its side, IBM will incorporate Avaya Aura, the company's latest telephony architecture, into IBM's Converged Communications services.

Aura provides a foundation for IP telephony and communications management.

In the other direction, Avaya has certified two IBM security systems (Proventia GX 5208 and Proventia Managemetn SiteProtector SP1001) as compliant with its IP telephony systems.

That compliance means IBM will be able to offer intrusion protection for a communications system built on Avaya Aura.

The combined systems will help companies "proactively prevent attacks such as denial or interruption of service, VoIP phishing, eavesdropping, malware and overall business interruption," according to the announcement.

"As more and more companies move toward unified communications, it's important that they take a holistic approach to security that encompasses multi-vendor applications in mobile and virtual environments," said IBM Internet Security Systems vice president Dan Powers in the announcement.

"IBM has created solutions in our Intrusion Prevention Systems designed to help prevent current and emerging threats and help keep unified communications deployments secure."
