All is not what it seems on the Internet for those users unlucky enough to be duped by scammers posing as online payment services in order to steal your most private of personal information, including credit card details.

As the saying goes, be afraid, be very afraid if you’re transacting online.

We’re not in the business of scaring our readers unnecessarily, but BitDefender’s latest e-threats landscape report isn’t a happy read, and clearly all Internet users, which pretty much includes most of the world’s population over about five years of age, need to be warier than ever of these scams.

According to BitDefender, there’s been an “alarming proliferation” of financial scams, with scammers posing as online payment services now one of the top 10 most spoofed identities in the world of spam and phishing.

The report highlights what it says is an alarming rise since the beginning of 2009 of online scams targeting electronic payment portals such as PayPal, and the portals of major financial institutions.
