The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a skin-tumor cancer drug, Palladia, especially for dogs. Its use will greatly improve the health and well-being of our four-legged friends. Currently treated with human-related cancer drugs, this drug will more effectively treat skin tumor cancer within dogs.

Pfizer Animal Health makes Palladia, the anti-cancer drug that was developed especially for our dogs.

It was announced on Thursday, June 3, 2009, by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the branded product Palladia (or PALLADIA, scientific name “toceranib phosphate”) would be approved for the treatment of mast cell tumors (MCTs).

Dr. Lawrence McGill, a veterinary pathologist at ARUP Laboratories (Salt Lake City, Utah) is quoted in ABCNews.com. Dr. McGill says, "It is a real breakthrough for a cancer drug to be made specifically for animals. Hopefully, this is the start of many products coming forward so that we can help pets with cancer."

Dr. McGill adds, "I strongly suspect that veterinary medicine will continue to utilize human anti-cancer drugs where appropriate, but new drugs directed towards improving the health and welfare of dogs, cats and other pets will be greatly utilized and appreciated.”

The type of cancer treated by Palladia is canine cutaneous mast cell tumors. Mast cell tumors are found in about one out of four of the skin tumors of older dogs and cats.

Also called mastocytoma, the mast cell tumors originates in bone marrow and found frequently in the connective tissues of the body.

As a normal component of the immune system, these mast cells release histamine during allergic reactions.
