The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves an over-the-counter laser device to treat wrinkles around the eyes. Palomar Medical Technologies makes the announcement on Thursday, June 4, 2009, and Wall Street likes the idea. And, likely, so will people with wrinkles around their eyes!

Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc. (Palomar), whose Nasdaq stock symbol is PMTI, is a healthcare/medical equipment, supplies, and distribution company, specializing in laser-based cosmetic treatments. It is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Palomar designs, makes, markets, and sells lasers and other light-based (radiation-based) products for use in cosmetic and medical procedures.

The company announced on Thursday, June 4, 2009, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its laser device, which will be available over-the-counter, for the home treatment of wrinkles around the eyes.

The light-based device is designed to remove wrinkles around the eyes, thus giving a person’s face a more youthful appearance.

The announcement allows the company to market and sell the device directly to consumers without a prescription from a medical profession (that is, as an over-the-counter product).

Palomar states that this is the first device of its kind to be given such an approval by the FDA.

The company says that its FDA-approved laser-based device will allow it to drastically reduce its price. The consumer skin care market is already a multi-billion dollar market, and will in all likelihood become even larger with the introduction of this anti-aging-appearance device.

A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation, such as x-ray, visible light, and ultraviolet) through a process called stimulated emission. Laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
