Google’s new Aussie headquarters are in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Pyrmont in a building called “Workplace6”, being a 6-star “Green Star-designed” building, where 350 Googlers will be working. Even before this building was unveiled, Google was already known as the No.1 place to work in Australia, according to "BRW Magazine and the Great Place to Work Institute” - and that was before this brand new Australian Googleplex was unveiled! Now that the new building is here, it will undoubtedly be a wonderful place to work. It sounds like an Apple Store on steroids, except instead of customers the entire thing is set up for Googlers, so they can work in an amazing environment completely committed to maximising their creativity, with places to work, play, eat, relax, work out, wash clothes, etc etc... all in amazingly cool design - and where everyone is already a member of the Genius Bar. Who wouldn't want to work in an environment like that?! If Apple Stores are the benchmark for retail, then Googleplexes are the benchmark for corporations to truly get the very best out of the employees Anyway, there are plenty of Australian-themed areas, “including offices with picnic benches, fish tanks, Australian flora, the beach-themed 'Cafe Esky' and a games room named 'The Rissole'." Some photos of the new HQ, the G-G and the opening can be seen here, and as anyone knows when it comes to Google’s ultra-generosity to its own staff, and can be seen from the pics and others online, no Google employee will ever think of Workplace6 as Workplace666. Well, unless they get sacked for using Bing or something. Australia’s big G-G is the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce, AC, who opened the HQ launch by saying to the assembled Googlers that: "You elicit the best of Australian ingenuity – what has always defined and distinguished us. You provide space and, importantly, time, for Australian ideas to emerge, develop, and proliferate... I thank you for your outstanding contribution to Australia’s economy, culture and progress." Google Australia’s own big G, the General Manager Karim Temsamani, noted that: "This spectacular office embodies Google's aspirations in Australia - make a great contribution to the vibrant Australian life, be a good steward of our earth, and make it fun and exciting for our employees and our Australian users." Google’s Australian division has been very busy adding to the Google coffers, working on Google Maps, Google App Engine and now the upcoming and brand new Google Wave “communications platform”. Google Australia's Head of Engineering, Alan Noble said: "There’s phenomenal computer science talent in Australia, so we're investing in the ecosystem here. Software engineers and developers are the true heroes of the web - the people who make the platforms and products that benefit millions of users and businesses." So, aside from everyone admiring the grand new Google digs, what other projects did Google announce today? Please read on to page 2… |
