Vodafone brings Visual Voicemail to Australian iPhone 3Gs at last E-mail

Although Vodafone proclaims it is “thrilled to be on the foot-front of innovation” in bringing Visual Voicemail to Australians more than 2 years after AT&T customers enjoyed it on day one, Vodafone’s tardiness is at least much faster than Telstra or Optus who still don’t offer it at all.

Vodafone Australia has triumphantly announced that it is finally bringing Visual Voicemail to its iPhone 3G customers.

While Vodafone is rightly crowing about this development, and that fact its competitors can’t yet offer the same capability, we can’t forget that US iPhone users have enjoyed this feature from day one.

Given that the world likes to bemoan how hopeless US telco carriers are in delivering decent services and coverage, telcos around the world who STILL don’t offer something as simple as Visual Voicemail for iPhone users should be ashamed.

Of course telcos will note that they have to change this infrastructure or that software or do whatever it is that needs to be done to make Visual Voicemail a reality, but honestly, consumers don’t care what the excuses are, and just want it to work.

So, for Vodafone Australia iPhone 3G customers at least, this is now a reality. Vodafone says in its press release that the service will launch by close of business “Friday 27 May 2009”.

Unless Vodafone is living in an alternate universe, they must mean “Friday 29 May”, because today is Wednesday the 27th, and Vodafone says that “over the next few days, Vodafone will proactively notify customers via a text message, alerting them to this new voicemail service”.

What’s so special about Visual Voicemail? As Vodafone notes, it allows its iPhone 3G customers to “see exactly who has left a voicemail message and what time they left it on their handset. With one touch, users will be able to choose what messages they want to listen to, or even skip completely”.

So, how do you get Visual Voicemail onto your Vodafone iPhone 3G? And how can Nokia N and E-series users on ANY telco get something similar, today, without your telco getting in the way? Please read on to page 2!
