SMS spam is alive and well.  Just don't expect to actually get the promised money.

I received the most interesting SMS on my phone this morning.

"You won $123,000 AUD,send your email address by sms text message to(+856207349489)so we shall send you an email with more information on how to claim your money."

Golly, I'm rich!

Hang on, that's a rather strange phone number.  Checking with an international dial code directory it appears to be Laos.

Odd place to have someone want to improve my fortunes!

Searching Google with the phone number, we find that a lot of people have received the same SMS – it seemed to start on May 7th.  Always $123,000, but sometimes in US dollars.

iTWire decided to call the number in question.  We immediately received "The number you are calling is busy; please try again later" in a number of languages – one of which seemed (to our untuned ear) to be Lao.

We decided NOT to send any details by SMS in response – this is clearly the closest thing to a 419 scam you can get in 160 characters.

If you also receive it, iTWire STRONGLY suggests you transfer it to the "giggle pile" and pay it no further attention.  You're no richer than you were before receiving it; if you follow through, you'll be much less rich than you are now.
