Working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, HP is recalling laptop batteries used in some Pavilion, HP Compaq, and Compaq Presario notebooks.

The recall, due to the danger that the batteries could overheat, is expected to affect about 70,000 computers worldwide.

The computers in question were manufactured between August 2007 and January 2008.

The list of notebook models affected can be found in the announcement on the HP website and in the letter (PDF) sent to customers.

HP is careful to point out that not all notebooks with those model numbers are affected--the consumer is asked to validate their battery by removing it and checking its bar code.

If the battery is one of those on the list, the consumer is instructed to stop using it immediately and contact HP to arrange for a free replacement.
