A free application restores data analysis tools to Excel 2008, using routines drawn from a professional statistics package.

One of the biggest omissions from Office 2008 was Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). That meant add-ins such as Solver and Analysis TookPack (ATP) went too.

Last September saw the return of Solver in the form of a standalone application that communicates with Excel 2008 via AppleScript.

The successor to Excel 2004's ATP is StatPlus:mac LE. As the name suggests, it is a limited edition of AnalystSoft's StatPlus:mac, a $US250 (currently $US200) professional-grade statistics package that uses Excel as its front end.

Like Solver for Excel 2008, StatPlus:Mac LE is a separate application controlled from Excel by AppleScript.

StatPlus:Mac LE provides the same set of functions as ATP and comes with a migration guide for those switching from ATP.

Capabilities include analysis of variance, correlation, descriptive statistics, regression, t-test and z-test.

"This free application demonstrates qualities typically only available in costly specialized suites – consistency and accuracy of results, reliability, plenty of data analysis models and tools, various data types, graphs, charts and much, much more," said AnalystSoft officials.

StatPlus:Mac LE can be downloaded from the AnalystSoft web site. It requires Excel 2008 (version 12.1.5 or later) and Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.6. PowerPC and Intel systems are supported.

"The Mac Excel team and AnalystSoft have been working together for the past several months to tailor StatPlus:mac LE to mirror ATP's functions, and meet the needs of ATP users. We're very, very pleased with the result, and we think you will be, too," said Gavin Shearer of Microsoft's Mac Business Unit.
