The much-awaited, much-anticipated film Star Trek is approaching its launch date of May 7-8, 2009 as new Starfleet Academy members James Tiberius Kirk and his U.S.S. The film will be released on May 7 in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe (with advance screenings in North America), while the official movie release in North America is scheduled one day later, on May 8. According to Hollywood.com, the premise of the movie is: “The story of a young crew’s maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals." An interesting comparison of original cast members of the 1960s TV series and the new actors portraying these same characters in the 2009 movie Star Trek appears in the Hollywood.com article “Star Trek: Then vs. Now.” And, movie reviewer Joe Neumaier critiques the new movie in his New York Daily News review. He states in his May 5, 2009 headlines, “J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' is a stellar gem of a film: Captain Kirk, Spock will live long and prosper.” Neumaier gives the movie “5 stars”—no doubt for Shatner (“Kirk”), Nimoy (“Spock”), Kelley (“Bones”), Doohan (“Scotty”), Nichols (“Uhura”), Takei (“Sulu”), and Koenig (“Chekov”) [Ok, it’s seven not five, but what the heck!] Neujmaier states, “It takes a lot of guts to try to beam a new "Star Trek" into audiences' minds. Serious fans of the sci-fi citadel have high standards, and newcomers can find four decades of mythology daunting…. A no-win scenario? Nope. The new "Star Trek" is more than a coat of paint on a space-age wagon train. It's an exciting, stellar-yet-earthy blast that successfully blends the hip and the classic.” For over twenty additional reviews of the movie, go to Movie Review Query Engine (MRQE) at “Star Trek (2009)."
