Australia’s proposed national broadband network (NBN) will  be scrutinised from all angles when industry heavyweights meet at a forum later this month, which the communications industry’s peak body, Communications Alliance, says is critical to ensure the NBN delivers the capabilities, services and outcomes required to drive innovation, efficiency and an enhanced lifestyle for Australia.

According to the CA, the two half-day ‘NBN Industry Connection’ forums it will host, will bring the industry together to kick-start its response to the Government’s proposed regulatory reforms to facilitate the NBN rollout.

The forums will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 19 May and in Melbourne on Wednesday 20 May, and CA’s CEO, Anne Hurley, says “there is a real buzz in the Australian communications industry today as our digital future comes closer to reality.”

“This makes it the ideal time to bring the industry together to discuss the big issues around the operation of the NBN and the wholesale services it will provide. The focus of the forums will be firmly upon the wholesale services and the regulatory environment for the NBN.”

Hurley says  that information from the forums and follow-up discussions will provide the basis for industry input to the Implementation Study which will be conducted by the federal government before legislative changes are undertaken.

“We will start these discussions from a strong base as the industry has been actively planning for the transition to a national broadband network for the past five years and has already agreed on a policy framework for a converged future.”

The forums will be facilitated by telecommunications professional .Gary McLaren, and Hurley says they are expected to attract a wide cross-section of participants including carriers, CSPs, ISPs, applications providers, content service providers, equipment suppliers, and tiers of governments.
