The Open Handset Alliance has released an early software developers kit for the upcoming 1.5 version of the Android handset platform, and detailed some of the features of Android 1.5.

A posting on the Android developers web site blog said "Android 1.5 brings a new default look for the Android UI framework. After Android 1.0 and 1.1, our designers worked hard to refine and polish the appearance of the system....The buttons and checkboxes have a new appearance."

Other promised improvements include: faster camera start-up and image capture; much faster acquisition of GPS location; smoother page scrolling in browser; speedier GMail conversation list scrolling.

New features include support for user installation of 3rd party keyboards and a user dictionary for custom words. The  new version will support video recording and playback, stereo bluetooth (A2DP and AVCRP profiles and autopairing and promises  an improved handsfree experience.

A full list of the new features is available here. Release of the new version is promised in the net few weeks.
