NetScaler is an "appliance" that works with application servers to provide load balancing and content switching, along with application acceleration, content caching, and other functions that help manage the load on servers and networks. The new Web 2.0 Push technology, an integrated feature of NetScaler, addresses the increased server demands of Web 2.0 applications. According to Citrix, while Web 2.0 apps provide a lot of responsiveness for end users, they "need to maintain a one-to-one user connection to backend servers for extended periods, which severely taxes datacenter resources and adversely impacts performance and scalability." The push approach proactively transmits data to users, relieving the servers of having to maintain all those connections all the time. Klaus Oestermann, general manager of the NetScaler Product Group, said that "adding this capability to NetScaler was the result of listening to concerns from customers about the growing server sprawl issues they are facing as Web 2.0 applications grow in popularity."
