Nehalem-based Apple Xserve leaked E-mail

For a short while, the Hong Kong online Apple store was offering to take preorders for "the new Xserve with Intel Xeon (Nehalem)."

Nehalem was the code name for the the chip series that includes the new server-oriented Intel Xeon processor 5500, formally introduced by Intel last Monday. Numerous server manufacturers, including HP and IBM , were quick to announce new hardware based on the flexible, power-efficient chips.

Nothing was heard from Apple, though -- no surprise, since the company is notoriously reluctant to discuss future products. But then the Xserve page on the Hong Kong Apple store showed up with a broken graphic and the text, "Pre-order the new Xserve with Intel Xeon (Nehalem)." The link was broken, as was the one for customizing the existing Xserve, so no actual order was able to be placed.

The idea that Apple would come out with a version of its 1U server based on the new chips is no surprise -- after all, a Nehalem-based Mac Pro was announced just last month. The webpage slipup does imply that the product's release may be closer than anyone expected, however.
