Skype has announced that the lite version of Skype, a 'thin' Skype client will be available as a free download for BlackBerry smartphones in May. Initially this will be a beta version for the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve, support for other models will follow.

The lite version of Skype will support Skype-to-Skype calls, send/receive of instant messages to/from individuals or groups and SkypeOut calls for users in Australia, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, the United States and the UK.

With the BlackBerry version all Skype traffic goes over the cellular data network. This is distinct from the just-released iPhone version which supports voice calling only over WiFi but Skype IM over either cellular or WiFi.
