Even though the global economy is in a financial downturn, Tesla Motors is continuing with its plans to produce an all-electric car in the United States. Its slick, seven-seat Tesla Model S was unveiled in California.

Tesla Motors, Inc. will begin to produce the all-electric Model S car beginning in late 2011. For $49,900, you’ll be able to get 160 miles between charges of electricity.

The sleek and curvy four-door sedan was presented for public display on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) rocket plant in Hawthorne, California (in southwestern Los Angeles County).

Tesla CEO Elon Musk (and PayPal co-founder) states, "Model S doesn't compromise on performance, efficiency or utility - it's truly the only car you need.” [SF Chronicle: “Tesla decides not to build sedan in San Jose”]

A picture of the newly veiled Tesla Model S is found on The New York Times automotive section article “Tesla Model S Electric Sedan Breaks Cover” (March 26, 2009).

Currently, consensus has been that the sedan will be built somewhere in the southern part of California, possibly in the city of Hawthorne.

CNN is reporting that the plant will be located somewhere near the SpaceX facility, which is located in Hawthorne, California and which was founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is also the co-founder of PayPal.

The March 27, 2009 CNN article “Tesla rolls out new sedan” states, “SpaceX recently won a NASA contract to deliver cargo to the international space station when the space shuttle program is retired next year. That contract, worth $1.6 billion, was won over such industry mainstays as Boeing and Lockheed.”
