The company was founded, in July 2003, by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, in San Carlos, California. The company is named after Austrian-American inventor, physicist, and mechanical/electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Buyers are already putting down their orders for the approximately $57,400 Tesla sedan, where $7,500 is deducted off the car as a federal tax credit. However, the cars will not be available until 2011, at the earliest. Officials with Telsa hope to initially produce 20,000 Model S sedans each year. Mr. Musk stated that three different power pack batteries will be available.
