Nokia N85 joins Telstra’s Next G brigade E-mail

Although 2100MHz 3.5G networks have the widest range of 3G handsets available for it, the 850MHz network (as used by Telstra, AT&T, Rogers and others) still has all the major players making top models working on the frequency, with the N85 (arguably better than the N96) now joining the line-up.

When the N96 launched, it had some pretty cool features that made it stand out from the pack, but the N85 is seen by many as the true successor to the N95 line.

With a thinner profile, an OLED screen, better battery life, a lens cover, a built-in FM transmitter, micro-USB for charging and wired data transfer, and all the rest of the expected N-Series features, the N85 certainly packs some power.

Sadly, it omits the flip-out stand from the back of the N96, has no Xenon flash (which Nokia only now offers on the N82 and something I hope it will re-introduce quickly for ALL of its N-Series models), and has no DVB-H TV tuner (which had no broadcasts in Australia anyway), while only having a 2.6-inch screen (as opposed to the N96’s 2.8-incher) – but its benefits still are seen by many to outweigh the negatives, arguing the N85 is the better model.

With the 850MHz network’s better voice and data connectivity, the Next G version of the N85 is even better than 2100MHz models, thus giving Telstra its extra edge that it charges its famous premium prices for, but at least you are getting something better for your money, should you choose to be spending it with Telstra.

No doubt the phone is modified with Telstra’s own interface, something it is immensely proud of but seen by some as needless meddling from Nokia’s original vision, but hey, it’s Telstra, a telco, and telcos love doing that kind of thing – Apple’s quest to largely keep telcos off phones doesn’t seem to have more widely spread, reflecting how much power telcos still wield over manufacturers.

That aside, Telstra is happy the N85 is now available, with its Executive Director of the Consumer Division, Ms Glenice Maclellan, happily noting that the Nokia N85 adds to the growing number of feature rich wireless devices available on the Next G network.

Maclellan added that: “The Nokia N85 combines a state of the art 5MP camera with an 8GB memory card which is perfect for downloading and storing music and videos from the huge range BigPond mobile has to offer.

“The combination of this highly featured device with Telstra’s wide range of advanced mobile content and applications like Sensis Search, Whereis and Trading Post give customers unrivalled value and opportunities to enjoy all the benefits of the largest and fastest mobile network in Australia – the Next G network.

Of course, Ms Maclellan isn’t the only Telstra executive with something to say about the release. Ross Fielding tips in with his pitch on page 2, please read on.
