Also announced is a 64GB CF (Compact Flash) card running at a devilishly fast 666x speed, promising 100MB/s speeds and coming close to the CF card format’s 133MB/s theoretical maximum speed limit. Pretec boasts that it has been the first to break many speed and capacity records in the memory card field, so it’s fitting to see it with the first SDXC card, although I do wonder how Pretec stacks up against the sales of competitors like SanDisk. As Pretec’s press release notes, initial SDXC cards work at speeds of 50MB/s but will jump to “104MB/s in the future”, and 300MB/s “possible” in the long term future. Sadly, SDXC cards are not compatible with SD or SDHC devices, meaning you’ll need a new SDXC capable device to take advantage of the up-to 2TB sizes. A 64GB SDXC card is due later this year. SDXC uses the exFAT file system, unlike SDHC which uses FAT32, thus the incompatibility, although all three SD formats look identical. Pretec also announced its 64GB CF card at 666x speeds (100MB/s), a speed boost over its recently launched 100GB CF card at a slightly slower speed of 433x. The 64GB card operates “four times faster than a typical CF card”, and is the precursor to a new CF standard called “CFast”. Given that current CF technology is limited by the 133MB/s “speed limit” of the Parallel ATA (PATa) standard, CFast will blow this away by using the Serial ATA (SATA II) standard to deliver speeds of up to 3Gb/s (375MB/s). Pretec expects to boost CFast’s speeds to 6Gb/s or 750MB/s “in the future”. Meanwhile, 666x speed 4GB to 64GB CF cards will beginning shipping in April. |
