The U.S. space agency NASA is paralleling the college basketball tournament in March with its own space competition called NASA’s 2009 Mission Madness tournament, which has various missions competing against each other to decide the Greatest Mission of Space Exploration.

According to the NASA media brief NASA hosts ‘Mission Madness’ tournament to vote on greatest mission, “March means tournament time for college basketball fans, and NASA wants to make sure space exploration fans aren't left out of the action. So, beginning March 9, the agency kicks off NASA's 2009 Mission Madness tournament.”

The interactive Internet online competition will provide users the chance to give their opinions on the greatest missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The Mission Madness tournament starts March 9, 2009, and, as NASA says, it is “Counting Down To The Greatest Mission Of All Time.”

Within the tournament, sixty-four (64) of the greatest NASA missions will compete for the chance to be called The Greatest Mission Of All Time

You’ll be able to learn more about the goals of each mission, and then you’ll predict which missions will be voted for the most by fellow exploration fans.

It is a bracket-style, single-elimination tournament.

The NASA media brief states, “The Mission Madness tournament provides key matchups between 16 past, present and future missions in each of four divisions -- Nebula, Stellar, Galaxy and Horizon. Round one features 32 predetermined matches.”

Page two continues as to where to go in the Universe to sign up for the NASA competition.
