Only weeks after Victoria's horrific bushfires claimed hundreds of lives, houses shook across Melbourne on Friday night after an earthquake measuring 4.7 struck Gippsland - the second in two months.

The epicentre of the quake was 96 kms from Melbourne, near Kurrumburra in Gippsland (38.377°S, 145.714°E), but was felt as far away as Sunbury.

The same area was struck by a quake measuring 3.7 only two months ago, which was followed 12 minutes later by an aftershock of magnitude 1.8. Quakes measuring 3.7 and 2.7 also occurred in Bass Straight in February, roughly 50 kilometres south of Cape Schanck. This most recent quake was Melbourne's largest in at least 10 years, after an earthquake measuring 4.5 struck Boollara in central Gippsland in August 2000.

Reports of the 4.7 quake first appeared on Twitter and Facebook within seconds, with Melbourne and #earthquake becoming the second and third ranked trending topics on Twitter. The story picked up on local radio within several minutes.

Melbourne 000 emergency hotline was flooded with calls, but there are as yet no reports of casualties or property damage.
