Empire: Total War pins much on its ability to recreate epic sea battles.  Today is the launching of its maiden voyage.

Having conquered the feudal Japan, medieval Europe and Rome battlefields, The Creative Assembly today set sail with Empire: Total War.

Publisher SEGA gives us the low down on the next chapter in Total War on the PC platform:

For the first time in Total War history, players will command their fleet in true 3D Naval Combat, as well as leading their armies in the stunning land battles that are the critically acclaimed hallmark of the series. Alongside the open ‘Grand Campaign’ game mode now sits the groundbreaking ‘Road to Independence’, a brand new episodic campaign which will gradually introduce newcomers to the incredible size of the Total War experience, as well as giving Total War veterans a new way to experience the game through a challenging objective based structure.

“Empire: Total War has exceeded all our expectations. It's one of those rare "great works" that the team will remember with enormous pride for the rest of their lives, and the public will remember as one of the landmark games of the decade,” says Mike Simpson, Creative Director at The Creative Assembly, “Looking ahead, we're excited about delivering more quality content to Empire via updates and downloadable content and we're looking forward to taking the Total War franchise on to even greater heights".

Empire: Total War is set in the 18th century, a turbulent era that is the most requested by Total War’s loyal fan base and a period alive with global conflict, revolutionary fervour and technological advances. With themes such as the Industrial Revolution, America’s struggle for independence, the race to control Eastern trade routes and the globalisation of war on land and sea, Empire: Total War promises to be the richest and most dynamic PC RTS game of all time
