Pacnet launches media delivery services E-mail

Just a week after rival network operator Global Crossing announced plans to launch content delivery services through partners, Pacnet (the former Asia Netcom) has launched its own in-house developed media delivery service.

Pacnet's Media Delivery Service, available globally from today, is aimed at businesses that need to distribute large amounts of rich digital media globally without wanting to manage or invest in a complex delivery network infrastructure.

Pacnet claims a unique differentiator from competitors by being the only such service to use route-optimisation to deliver content to the end user using the best possible path through the Internet. Also, according to CEO Bill Barney, it has a considerable cost advantage over dedicated content delivery services such as Akami which have to buy bandwidth at retail rates from network operators such as Pacnet.

The service is accessed and managed via a web portal that also delivers detailed reporting on usage patterns. It is claimed to support "all popular rich media formats including Adobe Flash, Microsoft Windows Media, Silverlight and HTTP/Web downloadable content."

It is provided with a service level agreement that includes a 100 percent uptime guarantee. It can also support live streaming for events such as meetings, trainings, presentations, sport games and concerts, but at only 99.75 percent availability SLA levels.

"Apart from digital content portals and digital media companies, we are now seeing enterprises across diverse industries, as well as the government and education sector, deploying richer media applications on our networks," said Barney. "But as the demand for distributing digital video and other rich media grows, this places a huge bandwidth demand on the network and this often leads to network congestion, which results in...a poor user experience."

John Currie, Pacnet's vice president of product management, said that launch of the service was "part of our product strategy to deliver a suite of solutions in the coming months which will enable us to simplify the use of rich media by businesses to expand their reach, and allows us to address the rapidly growing digital content distribution market."
