Disk drive manufacturer Hitachi GST is extending its play for the external storage market with the purchase of Fabrik.

External storage is becoming an important market as consumers build ever-larger libraries of digital media including music, photos and movies.

Fabrik currently sells external storage products under two brands: SimpleTech for consumer products such as the [re]drive with its aluminium and bamboo case, and G-Technology for the pro range that spans portable drives with FireWire 800, 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces through to a SAN-ready 16-drive RAID array designed for multi-user high-definition video work.

The units are marketed for use with Macs and PCs, and are built around Hitachi GST drives.

The company is now in the process of becoming acquired by Hitachi GST, the operation formed when Hitachi purchased IBM's hard drive business in 2002.

Mike Cordano, CEO and co-founder of Fabrik, will join Hitachi GST. He was previously executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Maxtor.

"Hitachi GST provides Fabrik and its customers all the benefits of a vertically integrated company. We gain economies of scale, financial stability, association with a strong brand and a worldwide footprint to accelerate our business growth," said Cordano.

No financial details of the transaction - which is expected to close "early in the second quarter of 2009" - have been disclosed. Fabrik is a privately held company.
