Despite the idea of evolution having been around for a century and a half thanks to Charles Darwin’s well known tome, “The Origin of Species”, and his statements on “the survival of the fittest”, AP points to a Gallup poll earlier in the week that suggests only 40% of Americans believe in evolution. The article also points to a range of polls that shows almost half of Americans polled believe God created humans within the last 10,000 years. Whether these same Americans believe God has fiddled with carbon dating technology and conjured up dinosaur bones to puzzle modern scientists is unknown, but it does make one wonder why people believe the things they do. When it comes to technological evolution, we’ve all seen it at work throughout our lives. From massive computers that filled huge rooms through to the first “personal computers” of the mid-to-late 1970s, right through to the ultra-portable computers and smartphones of today, one of the next steps for processing power is in powering the brains of humanoid robots we’ll see rapidly developing over the next two decades. Generally speaking, each new model of an existing technology shows clear evolutionary improvements, showing evolution at work through the hands of humans. If intelligent creationists aren’t interested in evolution, humans certainly are! But the evolution of technology isn’t what Darwin was interested in when he took his famous 5-year round-the-world journey on the “Beagle”, something you can read about in more detail here. Darwin’s book certainly changed the world, and has seen a century-and-a-half’s worth of debate that shows no signs of ending anytime soon. Indeed, the world might end first before the debate. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing the evolutionary changes Apple has planned for its 2009 edition of the iPhone. Truth be told, however, simple evolutionary changes as per the iPhone 3G from the original iPhone itself won’t impress anyone – not even creationists. What we all want is another revolution from the creator of the Jesus Phone. Yet more mere evolution just won’t cut it! |
