NASA is inviting everyone to choose the next astronomical object that will be discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope. As part of 2009, the "International Year of Astronomy," the competition is between various nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. May the voting begin!

According to the January 28, 2009 NASA media release NASA invites public to choose Hubble’s next discovery, “NASA is giving everyone the opportunity to use the world's most celebrated telescope to explore the heavens and boldly look where the Hubble Space Telescope has never looked before.”

Consequently, NASA wants everyone to vote for one of six candidate astronomical objects in honor of the International Year of Astronomy.

Hubble has yet to photograph these six candidates now positioned throughout the Universe.

So, this image could likely lead to new discoveries from out there in space.

The NASA contest website states, “YOU'RE IN CONTROL! In 1609, Galileo turned his telescope on the night sky for the first time. Now, 400 years later, your vote will help make the momentous decision of where to point modern astronomy's most famous telescope.”

The website states further, “’Hubble's Next Discovery -- You Decide’ is part of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Galileo's observations."

"People around the world can vote to select the next object the Hubble Space Telescope will view.”

Find out on page two your six possible choices, plus where to go on the Web to vote.
