Congratulations Mr President - Linux Australia goes to the vote E-mail

A new President is about to be inaugurated; yes, Linux Australia's Council is in the midst of its general elections with the results to be declared at the annual general meeting held as part of Linux.Conf.Au (LCA) 2009.

Up for grabs on the peak body are seven roles. Most visibly the President is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of Linux Australia which includes liaising with the media, other organisations and the committee.

Importantly for a non-profit community-run grassroots movement the President needs to keep the committee and other individuals involved enthused and active in their work.

Other executive roles include the Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Additionally, three Ordinary Committee Members help with the running of the organisation and help push initiatives that fall into the scope of the Linux Australia vision.

Members of Linux Australia may vote right now under the web site’s “elections” section.

In an election sure to raise little controversy, only one candidate has stood for each of the four key roles. I thus think it is pretty safe to say the next President of Linux Australia will be Stewart Smith, Vice President Stephen Walsh, Secretary Leah Duncan and Treasurer Anthony Towns.

All but Leah Duncan presently occupy those roles with Terry Dawson being the current secretary, thus ensuring a smooth and consistent changeover.

Where the end result is less certain is with the ordinary committee members, with seven hopefuls standing, specifically Timothy Ansell, Sridhar Dhanapalan, Joel Stanley, Melissa Draper, Ben Powell, Clinton Roy and David M Williams.

You may read the brief spiel of each of these people, with an impressive collective background spanning Linux.Conf.Au bids and organisation, leadership in Linux user groups, work on open source software projects, and general advocacy of Linux and open source within education and the media.
