NBN “Expert Panel” releases report – but only to the Govt E-mail

The Opposition’s desires to see the NBN (National Broadband Network) report released publicly seem to have been dashed by the Minister for Communication’s latest statement, which says the report has been received, but won’t be released to anyone else.

In a saga that is tremendously boring compared to Star Wars episodes IV, V and IV, but is potentially much more interesting that Star Wars episodes I, II and III, the Australian Broadband Wars have taken another turn with the release of a report that only the Government itself will be able to see.

Any timeframe for the report getting a wider release seems as unclear as ever. Indeed, we doubt that even Emperor Palpatine’s formidable skills into seeing the future would be useless when it comes to figuring out the Australian Government’s plans for any real NBN action.

After all, Palpatine was killed off at the end of Episode IV, so he was a bit useless, but anyone that has read the subsequent novels or read the wrap-up of the Star Wars timeline at Wikipedia knows that Palpatine had many clones, kept coming back, and even eventually managed to turn Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side of the Force.

No, Luke Skywalker never did join Telstra, but he did turn, and remained permanently scarred by the Dark Side. Luckily his sister, Leia, who also became a Jedi, eventually managed to save him and bring him back to the Light Side of the force. If only she could do the same for real progress on the NBN, rather than mostly vague Government statements.

Palpatine was eventually permanently killed while trying to stick his soul into one of Leia and Han’s young twins but we doubt that Senator Stephen Conroy will ever be able to kill off the Opposition’s demands that this report be released, and released quickly. Well, until the report is released.

But while science fiction is on my mind, and the NBN seems to be just another chapter in the Government’s imagination, the Minister for Communications, Senator Stephen Conroy, has made an announcement.

He says that the “final report from the Panel of Experts on submissions to the National Broadband Network process has been received.”

Apparently it’s a “significant milestone”, and Senator Conroy has informed us of a monumental decision, one quite unsurprising really. The decision is that “the Government is now considering the Panel of Experts’ report.”

Really? I thought the report might have just been shoved into a filing cabinet somewhere, perhaps even a round one, but funnily enough, the Government will actually read it, and read it some more, and then some more, and then will consider it.

More of what Senator Conroy has to say about the report and its non-release to the Opposition or the public is on page 2, although the rather unusual Star Wars analogies will likely remain here on page 1, unless my imagination takes me in new directions.

Please read on.
